Matt Honeyman, Bed, MCAP

I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor residing and practicing in Kimberley, BC.

I grew up in the Kootenays and early on discovered an intense interest and care for those around me. I feel privileged to have grown up in a place where my youth consisted of free exploration around town in the wilderness. My time here in my youth helped me discover my love for the area, the outdoors, adventure sports, and genuine conversation with others. I worked with the student council and social justice committees during my time at school and began advocating for equal rights and fair treatment at a young age.

While working towards my Bachelors of Education I worked as a tutor and International Student Activity Coordinator. These experiences in college and university helped me learn to work with people from all cultural backgrounds safely and effectively. I learned that honest curiosity in interactions opens doors to learn more about those you are working with and allows for a sense of safety and security for people in stressful and vulnerable situations.

My time spent in other communities helped me learn of the benefits that risks and new experiences can present. I worked in Lloydminster, Sk for three years and during my time there was able to work with children who were in protective care, families experiencing extreme poverty, and build social and emotional supports for students in the school environment. I learned to think from a biopsychosocial perspective and take interventions outside of the typical “box” in order to create success for individuals and families.

Experiencing compassion, care, and sense of safety from others in a traumatic time in my life showed me how important those safe relationships can be during trying times, and furthered my desire to provide that same care, safety, and compassion to others struggling.

I opened my private practice in October, 2020.

I am very pleased to be welcomed to Honeyman Counselling Services (now Triple H)!  I have lived in Kimberley since 2009 and prior to that, I was in Kamloops (Secwèpemc) and the Chilcotin (Tsilqot’in) areas of British Columbia.   I have a Master’s of Social Work degree from Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland; as well as a Bachelor of Social Work from Thompson Rivers University and Graduate Certificate in Child and Youth Mental Health, also from Thompson Rivers University.   I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW) with the British Columbia College of Social Workers.

Kimberley is where I chose to live because of the outdoor activities and small community, which fit well with the simple lifestyle I was seeking.  I enjoy reading, riding my mountain bike, trail running, Nordic skiing and exploring.  I am also a mother to a sweet and rambunctious child.

Working for our local Health Authority over the past 10 years, I have had the opportunity to provide many different types of counseling.  These have included being with people in crisis at the hospital emergency room, doing home visits and supporting people learning to live with dementia, and providing therapy individually and in groups for people experiencing moderate to severe mental health disruptions.  I have also worked with substance use disorder and supporting people in maintaining recovery.

I believe that all forms of therapy have elements in common, and they all should work to foster self-compassion and self-understanding.  I hope that my gentle and compassionate style will help to support my clients to explore their emotions, thoughts and automatic reactions in order to identify opportunities for change.

I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and acceptance and commitment therapy in my work.  I have also done the EMDR and am now offering that service. I am open to seeing individuals, and will refer couples and families on to my colleagues Erin Hefford or Matt Honeyman.

I am affiliated with the FNHA and am providing support to those seeking it through the organization

Erin Hefford, BSc, M.S.

I am excited to be joining the Triple H Counselling Services Team. After years of traveling, I moved to the East Kootenays in 2019 to be in an area with a wide range of outdoor sports. I have a passion for being active. Following this passion, I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science and a Master’s Degree in Sport Psychology. During my travels, I have had the privilege of working with student-athletes at The University of Tennessee, providing the mental training for athletes and coaches at a ski and snowboard academy in New England, and coaching gymnastics across the US and Canada. I have used these experiences during my sessions with weekend warriors, athletes, coaches, and even those who hate sport. As I worked with these individuals, I recognized that the challenges that they faced also affected their families. This prompted me to continue my education to focus on Marriage and Family therapy, so I could register with the Canadian Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT Associate).

Growing up, I was part of a military family. That is another part of life I have never left behind. My academic research has focused on supporting the mental health of our service members, our first responders, and their families. To further help in this area, I am an active part of the CAMFT Military working group.

As a new member of Triple H Counselling Services, I am now pleased to offer individual, couple, and family counselling through virtual and in person appointments.
